She is super excited to be working here at Hawthorn, and we are super grateful she has joined the team!
Facial Rejuvenation &
Aesthetic Acupuncture
starts August 14th !
for 10 weekly treatments
How does it work?
Facial rejuvenation acupuncture is a safe, gentle, all natural treatment. It is different from traditional acupuncture because of its aesthetic focus, gentle tools, and tiny, thin needles used to achieve its unique outcomes. These needles are placed in targeted areas (like sagging skin or wrinkles) around the face and/or neck. While it won’t feel like it to you, these small needles cause minute areas of “micro-trauma,” which signal to the body to “pay attention here!”. The body responds by sending in collagen, blood, nutrients, (and qi!) to the desired area. This helps your skin to heal, plump, and tighten, supports better repair, and leaves your skin looking, well, rejuvenated! Slightly longer, thin needles can also be used to stimulate the muscles around your face to “pick up the slack” and bring a natural looking lift to the jawline and face.
To offer the best results, Dr. Kali pairs the treatments with cosmetic grade light therapy. The LED utilizes therapeutic wavelengths of light to rejuvenate your skin. Originally, this light therapy was developed to support faster wound healing and help scar healing post-surgery - so just imagine the power it can have on fine lines! Light therapy helps to increase energy production in your cells, giving them the boost they need to follow the lead of the acupuncture treatment. It promotes your skin to plump up with collagen, bounce back with elastin, and glow with improved blood flow. The best part - LED light therapy is clinical strength, gentle, safe, and is seamlessly added to the facial rejuvenation experience so we can offer the best results.
A Series of Facial Rejuvenation Acupuncture can support:
Eliminating fine lines and diminishing deep wrinkles
Slowing the aging process of your skin
Improving loss of definition of the jaw, firming the jowls and minimizing “double chin”
Improve a loss of definition/“saggy” of the eyelids
“Lifting” of the face
Improvement of skin texture and color
Reduce puffiness
Improved circulation of the face
Support better health of your skin cells by helping them more efficiently produce collage, elastin, and energy!
All without a need for recovery time! Cosmetic acupuncture techniques can also be used to support acne, inflammation, and scarring.
About Dr. Kali
Dr. Kali Olsen is a naturopathic physician and acupuncturist with a private practice in Farmington-- Golden Root Wellness. She was one of Dr. Chimileski’s star naturopathic students. She went on to specialize in skin care and get her certification in facial rejuvenation and aesthetics. We are so excited to offer these coveted treatments at Hawthorn for our patients. Cosmetic acupuncture encourages graceful aging and clear, bright skin, building your confidence and providing a natural compliment or alternative to toxic chemicals, invasive procedures and the heavy medications that are a part of the aesthetic medicine, dermatology, medical spa, and plastic surgery worlds.
Certifications:
Certified in Facial Rejuvenation and Aesthetics
Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine
Masters of Science of Acupuncture, Masters of Science of Nutrition
“Long before starting my medical career, I became obsessed with the best ways to support graceful aging. I get it: what we see in the mirror can have a big impact on how we feel about ourselves. It’s not about perfection. It’s about feeling vibrant and healthy -- and there’s nothing wrong with wanting your face and skin to reflect that!
The beautiful thing about the art of facial rejuvenation acupuncture is that it’s more than skin deep. It’s a powerful tool to help us look and feel our best, but it’s more than just a quick fix. So much of the wisdom of aesthetics that traditional asian therapies have to offer centers around improving the health of your skin to help coax lasting changes in its appearance. Combining intricate needle techniques with individualized topical treatments, simple lifestyle changes, and the help of modern scientific breakthroughs like light therapy help bring on the aesthetic improvements you’re looking for while helping your skin cells to function years younger.
I learned these techniques so I could help myself and others age as gracefully as we’d like without the need to invasive interventions, and I’m thrilled to be bringing what I learned to Hawthorn Holistic Health to share them with you.” - a message from Dr. Kali
Cosmetic acupuncture is pretty popular with celebrities. It has been featured in countless films and media references. Last year, Gwneth Paltrow’s netflix series The Goop Lab did a whole feature on it in episode four.

Staycation Summer 2020
Everyone is spending a lot more time at home these days. Not only are folks falling back in love with their hobbies, houses, and yards but also their KITCHENS. This is a great time to lean into your inner chef and find new ways to mix up favorite recipes as well as try out something totally new! Dr C. whipped together a few things she likes to use to feel fancy, as well as add nutrition and herbs to her meals in playful ways. We’ve got quite a few fun additions to bring herbs to your daily living.
Entertaining friends or family for a backyard spaced out BBQ? Wow them with fancy herbal iced beverages.
These are some that seem to be crowd pleasers for everyone- including kids! They are awesome, nutritious POPSICLE options too. Hello summer!
Hibiscus, can also add it to a favorite juice to make a Hibiscus Pomegranate Juice for example
Add literally ANY favorite tea to lemonade - tulsi, hibiscus, ginger, turmeric, chamomile [great for kids!].
Green Tea Matcha [contains caffeine and theanine, so it is energizing but more balanced than coffee because the theanine is calming. It is also LOADED with super antioxidants. With the caffeine though, not recommended for children].
Red Raspberry Leaf- simple and delicious.
Sage Tea is recommended for hot flashes and night sweats
If you want to get real pretty with it, try making some herbal ice cubes. Using edible flowers or your favorite herbs, simply chop and freeze, then use to impress your guests. You can do this with any of your culinary spice--dill, cilantro, basil, rosemary, etc.--to pair with the drinks flavor profiles. You can also do it just for the beauty and added antioxidants-- remember just like vegetables, those bright colored flowers are actually good for you! Plus they have some elements that can function as prebiotics to feed your body’s own good flora!
Examples: Nasturtiums, lavender, rose petals, violets, corn lower, calendula. Always use caution when picking your own. Use your resources to make sure you identify correctly and be conscious of where it is grown; avoid anything grown in soil that could be contaminated, anything growing street-side or anything sprayed with pesticides. You can usually find some edible flowers at your local farmers market, natural food store or we have dried ones here at Hawthorn.
Beach? Boat? BBQ? Baseball Game? BackYard vacations? =TOO Much Sun ?!?
Let’s get this out of the way first: You should always try very hard and plan ahead as much as possible to AVOID getting too much sun exposure. We don’t need to hide from the sun, but since most of us are stuck indoors 5+ days a week, that one or two day of intense exposure can sometimes be too much--at least at first.
If you have sensitive skin, fair skin, or a family history of skin cancer, it’s imperative to avoid over exposure. Always remember: tan good, burn bad. However, we know that life happens, and sometimes you just get too much. We’ve all been there.
Hydrate! Simplest of all is to increase your water intake. A general rule of them is to be drinking half your body weight in water oz per day. So for example, if you weigh 160lbs, you should drink at least 80oz of water. Most folks do not drink enough water to begin with, so with an additional dehydrating insult like a sunburn, make sure you are getting at least this. Each hour in the sun and/or dehydrating beverages like coffee or an alcoholic drink necessitate extra water just to balance those out.
Nutritional Relief: Omega-3 Essential Fats
Most commonly found as Fish Oil or Flax oil, this form of essential fat can be very useful to deal with sunburn. Protecting the underlying tissue is the most important step if the skin has been overexposed to UV rays. This will also calm the symptoms most associated with sunburn-- pain and itching.
You should have very pure oil on hand, and it should be stored at temperatures below 78 degrees Fahrenheit. FIsh oils, like all oils, can become rancid and inflammatory if not stored properly. That means this is a product that is good to get a month supply of at a time, rather than the giant big box store brand that takes you 8 months to get through. Talk to the docs about which oil and practitioner grade brands are best for you.
Nutritional Relief: Vitamin C and/or Rosehips
Vitamin C is a well known antioxidant and can be used in high doses to help the body recover quicker from a sunburn. Taking extra vitamin C the morning of expected sun exposure can be helpful as well. Rosehips are a tasty way to get a high dose of vitamin C and other anti-inflammatory, skin healing compounds like quercetin and healing flavonoids. It has some minerals and vitamins to help replenish fluids and electrolytes too.
Topical Soothers: Our Botanical Buddies
Aloe vera: specifically the gel that you can squeeze out of one of its leaves when broken. This can be used straight out of the plant if you have one. handy. Alternatively, there are numerous prepared products on the market that contain aloe vera gel as the primary or active ingredient.
Calendula: These lovely, bright flowers are our skin’s best friend. There are a number of different ways to apply their healing touch to your irritated skin. The dried or fresh flowers can be steeped in a bath to soak your body in. You can apply a succus (a water extract) made from them to irritated areas. Or, you can use a cream made from them. Long-time patients of Dr Robinson will likely know his enduring faith in the calendula and zinc-oxide “diaper rash cream.” He has found it to be incredibly useful on a host of skin related problems.
Dr C. Recommends: Topical Tea Towels
Make as you would a tea with the following ingredients: healing skin herbs like calendula, chamomile, oats, rose etc. Let the tea cool, soak a small towel in it, put it in the freezer in a big ziplock for 5-25 minutes and boom, soothes the burn, feels like a bit of pampering and actually helps it heal faster too! You can also put the cooled tea in a spray bottle and spritz away the burn as needed.

NEW Genova Metabolomix+ test
Curious if all those supplements you are taking are actually getting absorbed, or if they are the right ones to be taking in the first place? Tired of chasing yeast infections, gut dysbiosis or leaky gut without really even knowing if you have it? Genova’s functional tests can be a great way to assess these things. These extensive panels used to be limited to blood draws with few collection sites, so we did not end up ordering them too often. They have now added and updated these tests for the same comprehensive results from a fingerstick test or urine collection sample. This is great for all who dread getting their blood drawn-- especially, of course, kids!

Celebrating Summer Flower Medicine
We use these trees and plants as medicines all year round- but it can be fun to spot them and appreciate their beauty in your yard or neighborhood too.
Mimosa Tree- Albizia julibrissin
Some of you might know this tree as an ornamental in your yard or at your favorite nursery. A true beauty to see in bloom in the summer. Just looking at it, it makes you happy! Which makes sense since it has classically been used as an antidepressant in chinese medicine for centuries. It’s common names reflect this:
Meet and Enjoy Bark: used to ease social anxiety, help relax and enjoy the moment, especially socially.
Flower of collective happiness: used for promoting a positive mental outlook and connecting to your world, family and roles.
Baikal Chinese Skullcap -Scutellaria Baicalensis -
Like its western relative, it is used to promote relaxation and deep rest. It is also an antispasmodic helpful for headaches, neck or back spasms, period pains or sore muscles. Chinese skullcap is an Immune modulating powerhouse- useful for balancing autoimmune conditions, inflammation, pain and histamine intolerances. Remember, it is always a good idea to start *BEFORE* your seasonal allergies peak in the fall.
Mullein- Verbascum thapsus
This underrated plant is considered a weed and discarded by many but has great medicinal value. It is a respiratory tonic, used traditionally for a variety of different conditions, including coughs, colds and asthma.
It is an anti-inflammatory and one of its most common uses is actually for ear infections. An oil extraction is made of the bright yellow flowers, combined with saint johns wort and garlic. This is used topically on the tympanic membrane (as long as it has not ruptured) to ease pain and fight in the infection.
Calendula - Pot Marigold
Skin herb extraordinaire! See the sun article above.
Saint John’s Wort Hypericum perforatum Famous for its antidepressant action but also a well studied and used antiviral. This grows like a weed along street sides and beachways. When you hold a leaf up to the sun you can see little holes or perforations. When you crush the leaf or flowers, your fingers will turn RED.
*never wild harvest plant medicines on your own without training with experts*.
Hawthorn Health Shakers!
It can be hard to remember to take your herbs or power foods, especially if it is not just popping a pill with your other supplements. For those nutritional boosts that you don’t need to do everyday, but want to do frequently enough to get the benefits, try using spice jars! Dr C has outlined a few of the staples in her kitchen, try them, or mix up your own :)
FLORA SALT: organic pink himilayan salt with calendula, violets and cornflowers to add a little rainbow beauty and antioxidants to any dish. Can be used as a finishing salt or put in a grinder and used as you would any other salt (the flowers do not have much flavor).
SEAWEED FLAKES : dulse, kumbu, nori and sea lettuce. Balanced mineral profile, great way to gently address low iodine and replenish minerals.
SUPER SEEDS: Used to garnish dishes and add a little protein, healthy fats and fiber.
Black seed, Nigella - check out Dr C’s recent insta post on this one!
Sesame Seeds
Hemp Seeds
Poppy Seeds
Flax Seeds
Morning Sprinkles: Mix and match your own delicious, nutritious additions to your morning habit, coffee, or tea. We recommend trying- cardamon, cinnamon, turmeric, ginger cacao, or a very berry blend of schisandra, elderberry and hawthorn. Dr C. takes this even further and uses frozen blueberries as her ice cubes in the summer, leaving the berries as yummy coffee flavor bursts to munch on to get you through the last sip blues.
You can purchase them ready to go in our spice jars, or buy in bulk to fill your own recycled spice jars! All organic.
