Hawthorn Holistic Health 2020!

Winter has slowly but surely arrived, along with the NEW DECADE! There are few new and important updates we want to make sure you all hear about.

Say GOODBYE to reminder calls and HELLO to the HAWTHORN APP!  Our app is LIVE in the Android and Apple stores. The app allows you to quickly see your bloodwork, check and resolve balances, message our team, contact the doctor, and more. Due to countless hours of our awesome team’s time being spent talking to your voicemails, we decided to let go of the reminder calls and embrace 2020.  Patients have the option for appointment reminders to be sent via email, using the app, or using the online portal anytime to check your appointment details. And of course, please still call in whenever you need to. :)

We do a lot of our communication  through social media, which we realize only reaches patients who have found and followed us on these platforms. Even if you do not use a social media account yourself (good job!), you can still visit our public business page, to check out the events and the feed from time to time to see what’s new-- cleanses, events, lectures, and apothecary treats.  You know we are always up to something! www.facebook.com/hawthornholistichealth/

We will also be doing our best to post more of our events and herbal offerings through a blog on our website, so check in on that from time to time to see if there is anything new. https://hawthornholistichealth.com/hawthorn-herald

We also now have an online apothecary where you can make purchases through our ONLINE store for events, cleanses, sauna packages, and refills.

What’s New in the Hawthorn Apothecary?

Cacao Cordyceps Clean Energy

Organic cacao, cordyceps mushroom, Hawthorn and rosehips

Simple, sweet, stimulating superfoods that are actually yummy to drink. Cacao has theobromine, which is similar to caffeine but not the same.  Cacao contains theobromine, serotonin, tryptophan, and a boatload of antioxidants that are important for mood, alertness, stamina, heart health and balancing inflammation. Cordyceps is a SUPER mushroom-- used for centuries for stress management, energy, strength, and vitality.  We now know it works on the adrenals and liver detox pathways to create these benefits. Rosehips are sweet, delicious bites of summer sun, loaded with vitamin C and antioxidants for everything from the immune system to healthy skin. Hawthorn adds to the liver, heart, mind, and taste benefits.

IMMUNE AND MUSHROOM

BROTH BUILDERS

These soup stocks combine immune boosting roots, berries, barks, and mushrooms to create a stock, broth, or soup for a tasty and powerful immune support. Immune Defense is a classic change of season, immune supportive antiviral combo of astragalus, reishi, shiitake, and goji berries.  Umam-I-MMUNE is a powerhouse blend of our fungi friends, and are great for balancing the immune response and promoting health throughout any season--shiitake, maitake, cordyceps, chaga, and reishi.

u·ma·mi

/o͞oˈmämē/

noun

  1. a category of taste in food (besides sweet, sour, salt, and bitter), corresponding to the flavor. Japanese, literally ‘deliciousness’.

HAWTHORN GOLDEN      MILK button jars:

27 servings of goodness in a little, reusable glass jar (BPA free lid) that is cute as a button!

FIRE CIDER

Look out for the Fire Cider post on our blog for the detailed “how-to and why-would-yous” of fire cider.  This traditional remedy combines a few standard ingredients, with great room for creative flavor exploration. Traditional fire cider is a combination of garlic, onions, ginger, lemon, rosemary, turmeric, horseradish, and peppers in an apple cider vinegar extract. It has traditionally been used as an immune booster and preventative throughout the cold and flu season. As a warming, spicy circulation promoting formula is a a must have for those who frequently get sinus congestion.  This can be imbibed on its own-- or used as a dressing/condiment on your foods.

Dr. C. took inspiration from some vibrantly-vital organic galangal she spotted at Thyme and Season on a lunch break and developed our Hawthorn Thai-Zing Red Fire Cider [hawthorn berries, hibiscus, ginger, galangal, garlic, cilantro, cherry bomb peppers, shishito peppers, lime, lemon, daikon radish, lemongrass, local honey and organic braggs apple cider vinegar]. We only have a few bottles of this, so snag it while it’s here; then make some of your own at home!  Click here for a link to Rosemary Gladstar’s teaching about making your own fire cider and here for a link to their new book with a variety of fire cider recipes.

Remember, Hawthorn Botanical Blends and superfood powders are available in various options-- loose leaf, jar, or tea bag. If you know you are getting loose leaf teas, bring a jar from home to help reduce waste :) Storing the herbs in a jar at home will keep them freshest too.

Using loose leaf tea is the BEST way to get high quality medicinal herbs at a great price. The teas can then be made with a reusable tea ball or french press at home, brewed and strained or if you are really committed to on the go tea, simply bag your own!  It is super easy, fast, and can be a nice little moment to set intention, see and value the medicines, breath, and be present in the moment. You can read more about the pros and cons of tea bags versus loose leaf here

Your Natural Family & Children’s Health

Keeping children healthy during the school year or when entering daycare can feel like an uphill climb. Parents can often stress themselves to extremes when worrying about their children. Can anyone relate to the panic when you get notification that a child in your kid’s class has Strep? The flu? Hand foot and mouth? Not to mention the difficulty of caring for your child when they do get sick.

If this is a concern for your family, schedule an appointment with Dr. Robinson to talk about preventative options that are safe and effective to protect your family. And don’t forget, when they do get sick, Dr. Robinson can help you manage the illness in the most effective manner, without suppressing the immune response or causing havoc to the child’s delicate microbiome.

Valentine’s Day Fun: Alluring Aphrodisiac Love Blends

We have a limited quantity of house blended aphrodisiac love tonics! Now, these tonics will not make anyone fall in love with you or turn you into an insta- Casanova. BUT- simply put, optimal reproductive health is reflective of overall health.  Use these tonics as a boost for your own self love, or as a shared intention with your loved one to make space for romance. Read more about the benefits and history of some of the herbs used in these below.

APHRODISIACs are herbs and foods traditionally used (and now researched) to boost libido, change blood flow, and enhance sexual performance. The truth is, many of these famous love tonics are actually anxiety fighting and cortisol managing herbs! Meaning they do their magic, simply by helping partners relax and let go of all the racing thoughts from the day and insecurities that cloud the modern mind and mood. These herbs also tend to enhance sociability, curb irritability, and boost confidence-- helping with performance anxiety. An additional action of aphrodisiac herbs is to enhance blood flow and decrease inflammation, also known as cardiovascular tonics. Look out for an aphrodisiac herb post on the blog soon.

Guided meditation and aromatherapy often accompany a 60-90 minute appointment. Happy Chinese New Year! 2020 is the Year of the Rat

Traditional Chinese Medicine World Foundation Blog Post:  Metal Element and Rat Spirit

“ As the Rat is the first animal sign in the Lunar calendar, 2020 is not only the start of a new decade, but also the beginning of a new 12-year cycle. Symbolically, the start of a new cycle is met with a renewed sense of excitement and potential.

Each element has a high swing and a low swing. This year’s element is on the high swing, which can work both for and against you. Metal conducts electricity, so you can say this element is electric! Energetically, Metal relates to Lung energy and also supports digestive health. If your Lung energy isn’t strong, you may notice issues with your digestion, lungs or skin this coming year. But as with everything, you have the opportunity to use this new change to your advantage. What power this fresh start holds for all of Nature and its beings! If, at the beginning of this energy pattern, we can align ourselves with Nature’s energy flow, we will enjoy greater health for the next 12 years.

The Year of the Metal Rat brings energy and promise (Metal) with resourcefulness and a bit of underlying worry (Rat)....While rats have been given a bad rap over the ages, research shows that rats are empathetic creatures that often display a strong desire to help other rats. Rat mothers are also extremely nurturing, teaching their children by example and putting their lives in danger to protect their pups. Extremely adaptable, rats conform to any environment they inhabit. Better yet, they often thrive and multiply, as long as there is a constant source of food. Clearly the Eastern world knows something we in the West have yet to latch onto.

In Chinese culture, rats are a symbol of fortune and plenty. Those born under this sign are known to be quick, witty, resourceful and independent. They are successful in their risk-taking ventures. Metal Rats in particular are reliable and financially savvy. They are often able to turn unlucky events in their favor. Rats are protectors, caring for those in their social network. While Rats, in general, are highly successful, a deeply-rooted sense of worry and lack of confidence can creep up and impede their progress. This year, Rats will be met with many challenges, but will balance that with an equal amount of successes.”

SMART SPRING:

Be Prepared for Lyme Prevention

This winter has been very mild, which can set the scene for a stronger tick population in the following year. We highly value the health benefits of being in nature but advise our patients to be both cautious and prepared for tick bites.

If you get a tick bite- take it seriously. Save the tick so you can have it tested. Monitor the area of the bite for rashes and skin changes, take pictures to document etc.  Treating the problem as soon as you are aware of it is much better than chasing it after years of chronic concerns. Work with your doctor to build your immune defenses, wear deterrent sprays (we make  an essential oil based one or there are many readily available at health food store). Remember to use strategies outlined in the images to deter and find ticks.

Though Lyme disease and the common coinfections are widespread across the US, Connecticut remains ground zero for this terrible illness. Most people in the Nutmeg State have their own experience or that of a close relative or friend who has been afflicted by this infection. Many of these also know the difficulty of going through months or years of chronic Lyme symptoms without effective treatment. As you might guess, at Hawthorn, we take a holistic approach to treating infections that includes treatments directed at biofilm destruction, lymphatic and detox support as well  as natural antimicrobials. We have numerous botanical and nutritional treatments that work in a coordinated fashion to restore balance in these difficult and extreme cases.

...Speaking of prevention...Remember to start your local honey, nettles tea, and homeopathic remedies NOW for a better  spring allergy season too.
